Use and Care

Use and Care of Your Washing Machine and Washer Fan™

Use only 1 tablespoon (1/8 cup or less) of liquid HE detergent in HE washers

Extra detergent is not necessary to get your clothes clean because most HE washers use only 3-4 gallons for the first cycle, which is for washing – every cycle after that is for rinsing. Using more than 1 tablespoon of detergent provides a growth medium for mold. The Washer Fan Team does not recommend the use of powdered soap because it can build up on the internal parts of your washer and may cause mechanical failure. Always use liquid HE detergent because it is formulated to be low sudsing for specific use in HE washing machines.

Use only 4 tablespoons (1/3 cup or less) of liquid detergent in traditional top-load washers

Traditional top-load washers, which have an agitator in the center, use more water for wash cycles than HE washers and it’s necessary to use more detergent. Using more than 4 tablespoons of detergent won’t get your clothes cleaner but it will contribute to mold growth in a washer’s internal parts. The Washer Fan Team doesn’t recommend powdered detergent because it doesn’t dissolve completely and may contribute to premature mechanical failure of your washer.

Never use liquid fabric softener

Liquid fabric softener is an ideal medium for growing mold, which is why the Washer Fan Team refers to liquid fabric softener as Miracle Grow™ for mold. This is particularly true for HE machines, which use less water. Their low water use does not allow excess soap and fabric softener to fully dissolve which results in a build-up of residue. As an alternative to liquid fabric softener, use fabric softener dryer sheets.

Use fabric softener sheets in your dryer instead (optional)

If you feel the need to use a softening agent, fabric softener dryer sheets will help keep your clothes soft and static-free without needing to use liquid fabric softener in your washer

Whenever possible, wash in warm or hot water

Today’s laundry detergents are formulated for cold water washing. However, the use of cold water will make any existing mold problem worse. Whenever possible, depending on the laundering instructions on your clothes or laundry, wash in warm or hot water.

Keep the washer’s door or lid open between use

After your Washer Fan Breeze is installed, your front-load washer’s door should be left slightly open. This allows the excessively humid air in the washer’s drum to be circulated out the door opening by Washer Fan Breeze. After installing Washer Fan Breeze on a top-load washer, the lid should be left completely open. Following this procedure whenever the washer is not in use will lower the mold-causing excessive relative humidity in the washer’s drum.

Clean your washer’s water pump filter every year

All washers have a water pump located in the lowest point of the machine, usually there will be a filter before the pump for protection. The filter will collect coins and other small objects left in clothing. Not cleaning the filter will result in restricted water flow which contributes to washer odor and potential mechanical issues.

Please refer to your washer’s owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to clean the filter in your washer. We recommend keeping a towel handy when cleaning the filter because several cups of water will drain from the system. If you don’t have your owner’s manual, they can usually be located on the manufacturer’s website. For proper maintenance most manufacturers recommend cleaning the water pump filter on a regular basis.

Replace the internal drain hose in your washer, if possible

If your washer currently has an odor, we strongly recommend that you, or a repairman, replace the washer’s internal drain hose. It is not mandatory to replace the internal drain hose, but it is highly recommended. Washer Fan Breeze will still permanently eliminate your washer odor, however, replacing the internal drain hose will accelerate removal of the majority of the mold that is present inside your washer and eliminate your washer odor sooner.

We have a link to Repair Clinic, in Partner Links, where you can order any parts directly, most internal drain hoses cost between $10-$30. Please refer to our videos that provide instructions on how to inspect and replace an internal drain hose.

Contrary to internet information, the mold on your door gasket is NOT what’s causing the odor in your washer. If there’s any mold on your washer’s door gasket you can clean it with an SOS™ pad and bleach wipes. Any staining that is left is unsightly but it won’t contribute to future mold problems – you only need to replace your door gasket if it’s damaged.

Clean your Washer Fan Breeze’s air filter and blade every 6 months

The air filter included with your Washer Fan Breeze can be cleaned and reused. A clean air filter ensures proper air flow through your Washer Fan Breeze by reducing the amount of dust and lint that accumulates on its fan blades. It’s important that you check and clean the air filter and fan blades every 6 months, you may need to clean the filter more often depending on the environment where the washer is located. Dust and dirt are one of the only things that can lessen the life of your Washer Fan Breeze and can void your warranty.

To clean the air filter, twist the air filter cover counter-clockwise to loosen the cover and lift it off. Remove the air filter and either rinse it thoroughly under water and let dry completely before reinstalling, or use a can of compressed air to blow off any dirt or lint that may have accumulated. Re-insert the clean, dry air filter and place the cover back on your Washer Fan Breeze, twisting clockwise until it clicks into place.

To clean the fan blades, you may need to remove the bottom blue cover if you have installed Washer Fan Breeze in the door opening. Hold the fan blade in place by putting your thumb in the center of the blade so it does not spin and use a can of compressed air to blow off any dirt or lint that may have accumulated

No special cleaners are necessary after Washer Fan Breeze is installed

Special washer cleaners and household products at best, lessen washer odor for a few weeks but do nothing for what allows mold to grow: A design limitation that allows standing water to accumulate in the lower parts of a washer. The standing water creates excessive humidity which is the perfect environment for mold.

Using the washing machine’s cleaning cycle won’t eliminate the odor because cleaners, either pre-packaged or liquid bleach, come into contact with the odor-causing mold for only a few seconds. The time and money spent “cleaning” the washer only temporarily masks the odor, which will reappear within days.

Once your Washer Fan Breeze is installed, it’s not necessary to use special cleaners or run any special cleaning cycles as the Breeze compensates for the design limitations found in every style washer and will permanently eliminate your washer odor.

Do NOT replace your washer tying to eliminate washer odor

All newly manufactured washing machines, including top-load washers, have the exact same design that allows standing water to pool at the bottom of the washer. It is a popular misconception that older top load washers did not have a washer odor problem. They did develop washer odor over time, we were not as acutely aware of washer odor at the time. Our customers tell us that they were experiencing washer odor in every type of washer on the market. Washer Fan Breeze permanently eliminates washer odor without purchasing a new washer.

For your Washer Fan to be 100% effective, please follow all of these Use & Care Instructions.
