The Washer Fan™ Team recommends that your laundry area’s relative humidity level be maintained below 50% year-round to allow the Washer Fan to be 100% effective. Humidity levels above 50% allow for mold to live and grow. The higher the humidity, the faster the mold grows.  The humidity inside your washer when you are done doing laundry is around 90%, which means if you have mold in your washer already, it grows really fast.  Washer Fan can only get the humidity level in your washer down to what the humidity level is in your laundry area.  For example, if the humidity level in your laundry area is 65%, Washer Fan can only lower the humidity level in your washer to 65%.  For Washer Fan to be 100% effective at completely eliminating or preventing washer odor, the humidity level in your laundry area must be kept below 50% year-round.

If you’re unable to keep the relative humidity under 50% with air conditioning or heat, we recommend that you run your dehumidifier in your basement or purchase a room dehumidifier.  Your dehumidifier only needs to be used when the relative humidity level in your laundry area is consistently above 50%.

If your home has a dehumidifier located in the basement, but your laundry area is located upstairs, we recommend turning your dehumidifier down to 35% in the basement. This means that the humidity in your basement will be between 35-40% and your upstairs, including your laundry area, will be 40-45%.

The Washer Fan Team recommends inspection of the fan blade, housing and air filter after every 6 months of operation. The actual inspection and cleaning interval depends on the washer’s location. If the washer is located in a dusty or humid area, such as a garage, Washer Fan™ will need cleaning more frequently than every 6 months.

How to inspect and clean your Washer Fan: Unplug your Washer Fan from its power supply and remove it from the washer. To remove the air filter for cleaning, slightly twist the air filter grill counter-clockwise until it clicks; the grill and air filter can then be lifted off. Clean the fan blade with a small can of compressed air, similar to those used for cleaning a computer’s keyboard. Clean the blade by holding the middle of the blade unit so it doesn’t rotate; do not allow the compressed air to spin the blades. To clean the air filter, you may rinse it in water and let it air dry or it can also be cleaned with compressed air. Place the DRY air filter in place on the Washer Fan’s housing and set the air filter grill over it and twist slightly clockwise. Plug your Washer Fan into its power supply and re-install.

If your Washer Fan is installed in your washer’s door or lid opening with straps, it will need to be moved out of the door or lid opening when you are running a load of laundry; however, it never needs to be unplugged. All Washer Fans were designed to leak air out the base when placed on the dryer or other surface next to the washer when removed.

Even though Washer Fan will continue to run while it is not in contact with your washer, thus allowing you to run a load of laundry, the cover on the bottom side of the fan prevents any direct contact with the fan blade.

Washer Fan serves a different purpose then the fan built into your washer. Some newer Whirlpool made washers (which include Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana and some Kenmore washers) come with a fan feature built into the washer. It is sometimes called Fan Fresh ™ , Fan Dry™, Fresh Hold™, Dynamic Venting Technology™, 6-hour Fresh Spin™ or Tumble Fresh™. The fan feature serves a completely different purpose than Washer Fan. You may install your magnetic Washer Fan over the metal vent on a washer that has a fan feature and not cause any damage to your washer or the Washer Fan, even while running continuously, and you are running a load of laundry.

The purpose of the fan feature in your washer allows you to keep your laundry in the washer for a few hours after washing them to help prevent your laundry from getting the natural mildew odor that all wet laundry sitting in a washer will develop if left too long. This feature turns off when the door is opened to transfer the laundry or after a few hours, whichever occurs first. The fan does not run again until your next load of laundry is finished. It is imperative that you always control the humidity inside the drum; this is why Washer Fan Breeze is crucial in controlling your washer’s odor.

Washer Fan serves a different purpose. It fits over the air intake vent or in your door’s opening and continuously circulates a low volume of dry air from the room into your washer. The air Washer Fan circulates into your washer lowers the high relative humidity in the drum and internal parts of your washer below the point at which mold needs to grow. The great news about your washer having a fan feature is that your washer MAY have a second air outlet vent. If your washer has a second vent (like the plastic, white, oblong vent in the picture attached to this article), you can keep the door of your washer closed between uses as the dry air from the room that Washer Fan Breeze is moving into your washer, can exit out this secondary vent. If you choose to keep your door closed between uses, we recommend that you check the soap dispenser tray and the door gasket for excess moisture. If there is water in the door gasket, you can wipe it down or leave your door open until it dries. If there is moisture in your soap dispenser tray, we recommend leaving it wide open or removing it and placing it on the top of your washer to dry as there is no other way to get dry air into this tray.
